Network Rail engineers are carrying out emergency work to stabilise the embankment of the railway between London Road and Clandon.
As a result, the line between Guildford and Effingham Junction will be closed from Saturday 21 December until Friday 27 December. South Western Railway (SWR) services between London Waterloo and Guildford, via Cobham & Stoke D’Abernon, and via Epsom, will be affected.
Network Rail apologises for the short notice but, recent readings from the remote monitoring they have installed on site have shown a significant increase in movement of the earthwork along the embankment from London Road to Effingham Junction. This means that the ground is fully saturated following the storms/rainfall from 24-27 November which has led to instability in the soil.
SWR are expected to operate one service per hour to Effingham Junction via Cobham & Stoke D’Abernon, and one service per hour to Effingham Junction via Epsom. Other train services to Guildford via Effingham Junction will be diverted via Woking.
SWR are sourcing a rail replacement bus service to operate between Effingham Junction and Guildford, calling at Clandon, Horsley and London Road Guildford. Up to date travel information can be found here.

At present Network Rail are unsure of all the work that will be required on site. For the work that they’re certain needs to happen, heavy machinery and material deliveries will be made to the site and the operations of these activities will cause disruption and increased noise levels.
Preventative works to stop the embankment from failing/moving will involve soil nailing (inserting steel roads into the ground) and sheet piling (driving 8m long sheets into the ground).
They have written to local residents who will be impacted by this emergency work to provide them with advance notice and further information of what their work involves.
